Cedar Shakes, Cedar Shingles, Cedar Roofing Materials

What is the difference between the cedar roofing materials; Cedar Shakes and Cedar Shingles?

Cedar Shingles are cut on both sides by a saw making the cedar wood a smooth refined surface product. Cedar Shakes are split on the surface side to create a more rough, rustic roofing surface.

The second most common question is what grade of cedar shakes or shingles should I use?

For houses, churches, commercial buildings we recommend only #1 blue label cedar products.

Why should I buy my cedar shakes or shingles from Cedar Roof Ontario and not a local lumber yard?

We not only stock the best grades of cedar but we are also very selective of the mills that we buy from, making sure their cedar product is not only up to grade but above minimum standards.

Cedar Shakes and Shingles Products

Briefly, we will look at the difference between shakes and shingles and their applications. Cedar Shingles are sawn. Cedar Shakes are split. Cedar Shingles have a relatively smooth surface while shakes have at least one highly textured natural grain split surface. Shingles and shakes made of Western Red Cedar are generally used for roof and sidewall applications in the natural or unfinished state.

Cedar Wood Siding Products

Cedar Specialty Shoppe can offer any cedar wood siding you may need. Western Red Cedar, BC Western Red Cedar, and West Coast Western Red Cedar are the most commonly used species of wood for exterior siding applications. All species are available in bevel, clapboard, channel rustic, ship-lap, board and bat, and many types of tongue and groove siding. Rough Cut Cedar is a relatively inexpensive siding compared to other wood siding products. Available in 1x8 and 1x10. Channel Rustic Siding in Western Red Cedar, is a good option too. Offered in siding patterns, panelling patterns, and boards for board-on-board siding, trim, and fascia. Cedar Specialty Shoppe also carries cedar decking, timber and beams, and shakes and shingles.
